Dr. Karen Herrick is one of those unusually gifted people, herself an experiencer of a transformative episode, who has the ability to really “hear” someone and guide them through whatever confusion or question they may have, to solutions that work and a depth of understanding that opens the doors to both heart and mind. Even professionals come to her for assistance.  She has been the Founder and Executive Director of the Center for Children of Alcoholics in Red Bank, New Jersey, for over 20 years. The power of a spiritually transforming experience to change people’s lives not only affected her, but alerted her to the large number of professional healthcare givers and their clients who were also undergoing similar experiences, including near-death states – yet were uninformed about what to do next. She found that through specially designed sessions, people could be taught how to recognize spiritual experiences and what could result from them. Dr. Herrick is now convinced that therapists should be trained in spirituality and in how to identify and work with spiritually-transforming experiences. Because of this, she is actively engaged in developing a consensus among therapists that these experiences do happen. Her proposal to rewrite DSM-IV-TR, V-Code 62.89, “Religious or Spiritual Problem,” in the diagnostic book therapists use, to embrace and better identify spiritual experiences and any problems that could result from them, is exactly what needs to be done in the field. Anyone interested in receiving a copy, just contact her and she’ll send it to you. Request: “Proposed Diagnosis Criteria for Extended V-Code 62.89 for Future DSM “Spiritual Problem.”
