A true story of an incident from Atwater's own childhood in southern Idaho when a rare weather anomaly occurred: hoar frost. . . a thick coating of ice needles that engulfed the area, turning everything as far as the eye could see into brilliant, sparkling crystals. Calling the child in the story "Sara" (the name of one of Atwater's grand children), she deftly weaves a tale of magic and miracles that brings into question the sometimes conflict between a child's dreamlife and what actually exists in the "real" world. Full-page drawings abound throughout the book, so children can have the fun of coloring them. Atwater admits that, try as she could, she was unable to do a credible job of drawing hoar frost. Nonetheless, what she did draw will delight children and adults alike.
